Rava Dosa

Rava dosa is a favourite recipe in our house. I make this once every two weeks. There are different versions in the measurements of riceflour, sooji and maida and I have tried many. Somehow I am comfortable with this version as it is quick and easy to make. It tastes delicious with sambar and chutney. This is my entry to Pavani's Weekend Breakfast Blogging Event .

Ingredients

Riceflour-1 cup
Rava or sooji- ½ cup
Maida- ¼ cup
Salt to taste

For seasoning

Mustard seeds- ¼ tsp
Green chillie-1 chopped finely
Pepper- a few
Curry leaves- a few
Ginger- a small piece chopped finely
Coriander leaves- a few chopped finely
Onion- ½ chopped finely
Oil and ghee

Method

Mix the rice flour, maida and rava and add water and salt to it. The batter should be watery and flowing. Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, when it splutters add onions and other ingredients .Fry for 2 minutes till the onion turns transparent. Add this to the rava batter.
Heat the tawa (the tawa should be very hot while u are pouring the batter) and take one ladleful of batter and spread on the tawa starting from the sides and finishing off in the middle as rava dosa cannot be spreaded like ordinary dosa. Drizzle ½ tsp of oil and ¼ tsp of ghee on the sides. When it becomes golden brown turn it over.

Serve hot with sambar.

Note:

Make sure the batter is very thin(thinner than the dosa batter). If the batter becomes thick after making few dosas add little water to it.

Some people use equal amts of rice flour and sooji too.

The rava dosa looks yummy Prema, it is my Dad's favourite tiffin and now it tops my list too, also becasue it does not need the amount of preparation the normal dosa takes. I've never tried adding maida to it, does it effect the taste much or is it for texture..?? I havent used pepper either, I add a little coconut flakes to the batter though.

Hi Prema,

My husband loves rava dosai, but for the past several years, I could not make the perfect rava dosai for him. I have been trying different proportions, but the the dosai always sticks to the pan and I always make a mess. So I had given up and quit making rava dosais. I came across your recipe last week and I tried it without much hope and guess what!!! It turned out to be so perfect!!! My husband was pleasantly surprised. Thanks to you Prema, now I am making rava dosai once every week. I look forward to try your other recipes.

Thanks,

Hi Prema,

I tried rava dosa today. It came out very well. There are so many combinations that I am aware of. But your measurements are perfect. Thanks for sharing. Your recipe is more than two years old, but even now you get so many good comments. I think the reason would be because of perfect measurements.

Nice recipe. I have made dosa before and after four years got it right as hubby likes it.

First time I am trying this.. It was ok. I did it a bit differently.

I put water, rice flour and maida in the blender with ginger paste and onions...then in the bowl I added the sooji.

I am confused about the salt amount and water amount though. Can you tell me an approx amount of water to get the thin consistency you get? I added very less (1 and1/2 cup water).

I want to try it again. It is so easy. Thanks.
